The recent financial crisis exposed some glaring weaknesses in the EU’s financial markets regulatory frameworks governing the distribution and sale of retail investment products such as funds to the region’s community of end-investors. As a result, the European Commission began to look for ways to enhance the transparency and robustness of the investment management industry, leading to the creation of new investor protection requirements for market participants.
