Description
Following the financial crisis of 2008, a wave of regulatory change provided fertile ground for non-bank liquidity providers and alternative trading venues to flourish, presenting the buyside with an array of new trading execution options.
In 2025, the retail FX trading market is continuing to expand, even in the aftermath of the pandemic-fuelled trading frenzy that saw a wave of new, stay-at-home retail investors seize more speculative trading opportunities. This growth in retail FX trading flourished as regulatory activity created a more retail investor friendly environment. In the main, this is because increased regulatory control provides a more even playing field for retail market participants.
Regulation has democratised market access, by mandating that retail customers should be charged zero commission, allowing them to undertake fractional investing, and having access to automated, institutional-like investment management tools with investor safeguards (i.e. minimum broker capital requirements).
At the same time, however, the tightening of regulations on retail brokers has increased barriers to entry in more developed markets, leading to market share being concentrated in the hands of fewer retail brokers. As such, competitive differentiation between retail brokers has become more important than ever before, with effective deployment of AI investment capabilities being a key value-add in terms of product offering for a younger, more technologically-savvy investor demographic.
